Devils River Whiskey: Cocktail Contest & More!
Mystery “basket” ingredients

One of the coolest things I did in 2020 (yuck!) – and certainly a top highlight of the year –  was partake in Devils River Whiskey: Cocktail Contest & More! Created and collaborated with the Austin Food Blog Alliance, several other members and I agreed to participate and boy was it fun…and the competition was fierce!

Each participant was sent Devils River Coffee Bourbon (absolutely delicious by itself) an assortment of mystery “basket” ingredients (I actually pulled out a lidded basket; lol!), one of which had to be used in the cocktail recipe – think Food Networks’s “Chopped.” 🙂 I had brainstormed days prior, thinking of what would pair well with coffee flavor, and had a pretty good idea what I wanted to make. The box came with hot chocolate powder and liquid coffee creamer, so Spiked Choco “Latte” was it was.

Let’s dive into Devils River Whiskey: Cocktail Contest & More!, shall we? A truly unique experience with a truly Texas spirited whiskey!

Equipment

  • milk frother

Ingredients

  • 1.7 oz Devils River Coffee Bourbon measure or one mini bar bottle
  • 1 cup your favorite drinking milk chocolate completely cooled in refrigerator
  • 1/4 cup liquid dairy coffee creamer frothed
  • 8-10 dashes orange bitters to taste
  • 1 orange slice for garnish optional; see "how to" at end of recipe

Instructions

  • Pour whiskey and chilled hot chocolate over ice in a 16 oz Mason jar (or vessel of your choice).
  • Add bitters. Stir.
  • Froth milk using a battery charged frother, or method of your choice (see link in post body text on where to buy).
  • Gently pour frothed milk on top of cocktail.
  • Enjoy!
  • OPTIONAL: Make extra hot chocolate to make large square ice cubes, as seen in the main photo.

Notes

Candied orange garnish:
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut a fresh orange into thin slices. Place them on a parchment lined baking pan for ~15 minutes; take care not to burn. Char is good, burnt is bad.
Make sure your orange is nice and juicy. No need to add an additional sugar for beautiful caramelization and yummy taste.

Each participant submitted their recipe and a photo. Three round robin-style rounds ensued. Honestly I would have been thrilled to make it in the top three. When I discovered I was awarded first place, I was thrilled, honored, and humbled. I can’t thank everyone who voted for me and showed so much support. You are the ones who gave me the win, not my mixology skills. Feel so blessed.

Congratulations to the other winners! Great cocktails!

My little five seconds of fame was great and came with a huge reward. The prize. HOLY MOLY! I was so elated and blown away. Devils River Whiskey was SO incredibly generous. There was so much stuff, I had a difficult time fitting it all into one frame for a picture. And, Devils River beautiful bottles inspired me to buy a new “liquor” shelf to proudly display them and the oak cask I received.

Super cool cask!

MORE ABOUT DEVILS RIVER WHISKEY:

The distillery is located right in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Texas, steps away from The Alamo and famous San Antonio River Walk [currently closed to the public due to COVID]. There are five variants to choose from, sure to please all palates.

How they make their whiskey:

“THE DEVIL IS IN THE DETAILS
Devils River Whiskey owes its unique taste to our meticulous attention to detail. We begin with select grains, carefully chosen to bring out the warm, golden notes of Devils River Whiskey.  We ferment our whiskey with proprietary yeast designed to bring out the bold flavors of Devils River. The mash is distilled in traditional copper pot stills and then our whiskey is aged in dark #4 charred oak barrels, which enriches the deep amber color and the bold flavor.
DEVILS RIVER WATER
At the heart of the process, the whiskey is combined with the pure, limestone-filtered spring water of the whiskey’s namesake Devils River. It’s the excellent water quality of the Devils River that unmasks all of the pristine nuances that we worked tirelessly to get into our small batch whiskey. The world’s Master Distillers agree: pure, limestone-filtered water is essential in producing the highest quality whiskey.
FINISHING DEVILS RIVER WHISKEY
Our proprietary chill filtration process lends the whiskey its signature smoothness and removes any harshness that might distract from the warm mouth-feel and flavorful notes of Devils River Whiskey.”

And Devils River protects their water source and gives back. Proceeds from every bottle go to the Devils River Conservancy.
