Schlotzsky’s Austin Eatery: Newly Opened Concept – Not Your Average Sandwich Shop

The first Schlotzsky’s was “born and bread” in 1971 on South Congress, where they served their scratch made sourdough hugged sandwiches on frisbees. The focus was on quality food and fun, and the shiny new (franchise) Bee Cave concept store takes both to a whole other level. Don’t fret, this “Austin Eatery” still has the classics like the Original (and nom soups) that made them famous, but they have added a plethora of items inspired by the distinct Austin food scene. So, it’s no surprise that SAE offers tacos and delicious brisket and steak sliders. The “street” tacos and sliders are mighty tasty; moist chicken, freshest veg, great flavor and texture combinations, smoky brisket, flavorful sauces and more. Three to choose from of each and reasonably priced at 2 for 6$ or 3 for 8$, and you can mix as you please (tacos and tacos; sliders and sliders).

They’ve also added an extensive choice of specialty sandwiches (hello “Bacon Me Crazy”), flatbreads, salads, and “tins” (think cheesy mac or tot bowls). I haven’t eaten my way through the entire menu yet…it might take a while as it is fairly extensive. The “inspired” sandies are all the same size (medium) and are 7.99$ (gluten free options available). All sandwiches available on their classic sourdough or choose from fresh wheat, dark rye, or jalapeno cheese. It is very obvious Chef Morales put a lot of thought into creating each one, all unique and divine with every bite. Even with the upgrades and expanded options, they have stayed true to Schlotzsky’s roots by continuing to offer good food fast that won’t break the bank.

Be sure to take advantage of the wonderful pickle and condiment bar (pickled red onions, peppercinis…). Great accouterments to all of your food choices and I love Schlotzsky’s hot sauce.
This location houses a monstrous Coca-Cola® “Freestyle” machine where you can get the soda of your choice (so many options), make your own custom blend, or even just get some sparkling water if that’s your mood. SAE also offers a few local craft beers and a cider, and wine by the glass (choice of red or white). Oh, I would be remiss not to mention they also have fresh Cinnabon goodies on-site in case you need a sweet tooth fix. 😉

The interior is bright and fun and captures the ATX vibe. Very cool décor with bright signage and touches of Texas’ Capital City’s most popular icons (see if you can spot them!). Certainly nothing “generic” about it. There is also a large adjacent covered patio for dining al fresco.

So happy to have SAE concept store in the Lake Travis area. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Grand opening was March 1, 2018. Wine not available until next week (Mar 19). Will eventually have happy hour and live music. Even more awesomeness to come!

NOTE: There is another “Austin Eatery” located in the Arboretum area; however, it is a corporate remodeled menu. Some items not available and the older store has the same aesthetics as other Schlotzsky’s restaurants. A fine place, I’m sure.
